Are you stuck and don’t know what would work best to transform your home into the lovely and cozy space you need? Here you'll find 5 simple rules that will help you learn how to decorate your home like a professional interior designer and avoid costly design mistakes.

Home – that living space where the warm and relaxing environment helps you escape from the everyday world and forget about problems and stress.
Your home should be an oasis of tranquility that embraces you in a warm and joyful mood and gives your whole family the energy and relaxation it needs.
Any decor elements and furniture items that you want to bring in your space should only contribute in creating a home that represents you. I bet you’ll want to disconnect into a home that reveals your personality, which feels is yours.
Well, you’ll be able to create such an inviting feeling in you home, even by your own, and decorate your home like a professional designer by following these 5 simple rules.
How To Decorate Your Home Like A Pro - Rule #1 – Functionality & Focal Point
First thing you have to consider when arranging a space is its function. And in order to find the best layout for the good functionality of your space, you need to define its focal point. The focal point can be any elements from the room that attracts your attention, for example, a fireplace, a unique wall art, a large window with a spectacular view, a colorful rug, wood beams, an accent wall, a statement chandelier, or even the sofa area with a special table in the middle can become a focal point.
Just remember that choosing a focal point helps the space not to become too crowded and keeps you on track with decorating the space in a harmonious way. The flow is also essential as you’ll have to get easily from one space to another.

How To Decorate Your Home Like A Pro - Rule #2 – Proportions and scale

Interior design isn’t just about pleasing the eye, it is also about the details that will make the room work specifically for you.
This means that you should have in your space only the furniture that meets the day-to-day needs and help make your life easier and more comfortable. Before starting a design concept, you need to decide what you plan to do in that space, what you’ll use it for, what kind of furniture do you need, will it be just a space for relaxation or you’ll need more storage spaces. After having your „wish-list” with the items you really want to have in your room, you’ll need to sketch the 2D space plan.
This way you’ll understand what is happening in that space, be able to better feel the dimensions, the volumes, the heights, where the door opens, and if there is enough space between the elements for an easy and airy flow.
How To Decorate Your Home Like A Pro - Rule #3 - Balance
There are three types of visual balance that you can use in your home design: symmetrical, asymmetrical, and radial.
A symmetrical balance is when, for example, on a console table, you place two candles, each at one end. The two candles represent the image in the mirror for each other.
Asymmetric balance is when two different objects are placed symmetrically. For example, using the same table, you can place a candle at one end and a long, thin vase at the other end. Both are placed symmetrically with each other but do not represent the image in the mirror.
The radial balance is a concentric placement of the elements extending outward or inward to a central point. For example, a circular dining table with chairs placed around it over a round rug.

How To Decorate Your Home Like A Pro - Rule #4 - Contrast, Rhythm & Progression-

Using contrast you’ll bring the element of surprise and avoid the monotony when designing your home. For example, if you have all the pieces of furniture in the same style, add bold accessories or various color accents or shapes to contrast with the rest of the room.
Rhythm is also the visual repetition in the room. Your home needs contrast to be surprising, but it also needs similar elements that are repeated. The rhythm can be achieved by repeating lines, shapes, colors, or textures. For example, the color of a pillow on the sofa will be found in a piece of art, rug, or accessories.
Progression is when an element is gradually arranged according to one of its qualities. The easiest to imagine is a placement depending on the size of the item – as a table on which are placed a few candles, the same, but of different sizes.
How To Decorate Your Home Like A Pro - Rule #5 – Light
From the physics point of view, light is the electromagnetic radiation whose wavelength is visible. From the perspective of metaphysics, light is life, love, food, energy, divinity. From the point of view of feng shui, light is an energizer, an activator, a remedy for your home.
Remember, there are 3 types of light that you should use when you want to decorate your home:
- Ambiental or General Light – provides complete lighting of a room at a comfortable level of brightness
- Task light – provides enough illumination to help you undertake specific tasks
- Accent light – offers a direct light, which highlights only a certain element of that room

Additional tips

Use the rule of odd numbers. It refers to the decorative elements that must be grouped in odd numbers. Experts say that this type of arrangement is pleasing to the eye, memorable, and creates more harmony in your home. Group different objects such as height, shape, texture, but the same time, that have something in common, for example, color.
Try out online tools like RoomSketcher or RoomStyler to create the virtual version of your home with all the design elements that you want to bring in. That will help you avoid costly design mistakes, such as: choosing the wrong chairs with arms higher than the height of the table or the sofa or the library being too big for the allocated space, not being able to enter the stairwell with the bed, etc. All these details are not often taken seriously, but for this, the 2D floor plans and 3D renderings are very important because they ultimately allow you to have a more accurate configuration of our living area.
